The United States Department of Energy has mentioned in its official website the importance of properly maintaining a home air conditioning system.

“The most important maintenance task that will ensure the efficiency of your air conditioner is to routinely replace or clean its filters. Clogged, dirty filters block normal airflow and reduce a system’s efficiency significantly. With normal airflow obstructed, air that bypasses the filter may carry dirt directly into the evaporator coil and impair the coil’s heat-absorbing capacity. Replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5% to 15%.”

Third Party Service Ratings Website Angie’s List has meanwhile discussed when an air conditioning units needs servicing. In its website it mentioned that A/C units need a thorough professional check to ensure that it is running on optimal condition. Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association

“Even if you don’t suspect any problems with your air conditioning unit, heating and cooling experts on Angie’s List say it’s a good idea to have it inspected, serviced and cleaned once a year — ideally in the spring — to ensure it operates at peak energy efficiency and is ready to cool your house during the months you need it most. As your HVAC system runs, it accumulates dust and dirt in key areas that affect its efficiency, like the condensing coils and air filters. Left unchecked, your A/C system can lose 5 percent of its operating efficiency each year because of this buildup.”

They will test the voltage, inspect the condition of the belts, vents, and ducts, check the refrigerant, and examine the drainage lines. They should also lubricate any ports that may be present. They will inspect the blower motor and test the thermostat to ensure proper operation. A motor that is drawing too many amps may be about ready to fail completely.”
